JoWood - Fate of Hellas

Posted in: Computers, Entertainment, Marketing |

If at first glance you get a strange sense of déjà vu when you look at the box cover for this game, then don’t be spooked. Developers World Forge recently released Ancient Wars: Sparta, an RTS which featured Spartans, Persians and Egyptians fighting for supremacy.

Fate of Hellas could almost be seen as Version Two, as the same three nations are again at loggerheads but this time the Macedonians have been added to the mix. There are two campaigns of seven missions each and the aims are broadly the standard ones of forging alliances with potential friends and then building an impressive enough force to overcome your enemies.

It’s perhaps unfortunate that Fate of Hellas has been released simultaneously with World Forge’s other ‘ancient world’ strategy game, The Golden Horde, as the interface, graphics and gameplay are virtually identical.

Swirl Tables are available in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. Rectangle, card, half round, round, quarter round, crescent, and square pedestal are the different available models of the table.

Archos - TV+

Posted in: Computers, Entertainment, Marketing |

Archos is best known for its music and media players, which are among the best liked, by those not buying Apple. The TV+ box is something of a departure for the company; a media streamer and PVR. This isn’t a TV tuner - there’s no Freeview or Sky compatibility built in - so it sits between a set-top box and your TV, feeding the signal through.

What it does do is take media from a server on your PC, via Ethernet or WiFi connections, and play it back on your TV screen. It can record up to 250GB of material on its built-in hard drive, too (there’s an 80GB model for around £160).

Archos has remembered its media player customers with type A and B USB sockets on the side, so you can easily download media from the box to a player.

Celtx - Celtx 0.9.9.7

Posted in: Computers, Entertainment, Marketing |

Specialist software to format the likes of a screenplay or theatre script has for a long time been the kind of luxury few can afford. Granted, there are some cut-down, low cost packages available, but movie industry-standard tools such as Final Draft cost over £130, and story-plotting software such as Dramatica doesn’t come cheap either.

Celtx does. Because this is a testament to the growing maturity of the open source software movement, where it’s producing sophisticated tools to tackle even niche areas of computing. Celtx has been around for a couple of years now, and its latest iteration, version 0.9.9.7, proves to be a sophisticated and welcome tool.

Sega - Sega Superstars Tennis

Posted in: Computers, Entertainment, Marketing |

Sublime idea, this. Take the workings behind the brilliant Virtua Tennis games, bring in a host of Sega characters, mix them all together, and you have a family-friendly sporting game that prides itself on fun above all else. What’s not to like?

Well, a few things, but we’ll get to them shortly.

The game takes the Virtua Tennis engine and dilutes it slightly, which increases accessibility, but also feels like it’s dumbed things down a little. Then you choose from one of the handful of available characters to you from the off (the others are waiting to be unlocked as you progress, of course), each of which has a selection of strengths and weaknesses that you need to be aware of.

More interestingly, and where Sega Superstars Tennis really gets itself an identity beyond its cast, is the special moves that are assigned to each of the characters.

JoWood - The Golden Horde

Posted in: Computers, Entertainment, Marketing |

It’s becoming harder to find a period in history that hasn’t been plundered for the latest real-time strategy game, and thankfully developers World Forge shied away from obvious targets like WWII and the Roman Empire.

Instead The Golden Horde is set in the early Middle Ages (i.e. the beginning of the thirteenth century) when the Mongol descendants of Genghis Khan took on the armies of Crusaders and Russians. In the campaign mode you can choose any of the three foes to fight for or against, or go online and play in multiplayer mode.

The interface is immediately recognisable, with a mini-map displayed bottom-left (with the usual Fog of War), troop details in the centre and an order menu bottom-right.
